\b0 This small town at the confluence of the Meurthe and the Vezouse retains the appearance that was
given to it by the last Dukes of Lorraine. The castle, in the classical style and with a monumental entrance, was built to plans by the architect Boffand from 1703 onward. Duke Leopold, driven out of Nancy by the French, dreamed of turning it into a riv
al of Versailles. He undertook a program of construction and created a range of sumptuous amenities: stables for three hundred horses, a menagerie, an orangery, and parks and gardens. Stanislas Lesczinski, the dethroned King of Poland and father-in-law o
f King Louis XV, who was given the title of Duke of Lorraine, continued this tradition and held a brilliant court in the castle from 1735 until his death in 1766.\par
